Stefan Reuter was born in 1957 in Berlin and grew up in Kassel. During his school years he took violin and flute lessons. Afterwards he decided to study timpani and percussion and therefore took percussion and piano lessons.

From 1978 to 1981 he studied at the Folkwang Academy in Essen with Professor Alfred Alings and at the Academy of Arts in Berlin with Klaus Kiessner.

From 1981 to 1986 he was principal timpanist in the Orchestra of the Hessian State Theater of Wiesbaden, in 1984 he was invited to join the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra and since 1986 he has been principal timpanist in the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

In 2009, Stefan Reuter published his knowledge of playing timpani in a book with the title: “Pauke Timpani Spielpraxis: Plädoyer gegen den Abschlag / der Paukenwirbel und seine nachfolgende Note” (“Timpani – Timbales: Plea Against the Release Stroke / The Timpani Roll and its Following Note”).
